Ultra-modern extension and internal changes transform a suburban home into something rather special
Having chosen an architect, the owners of this home in Herne Hill commissioned Mono Ltd as contractors for their bold and adventurous transformation project. The property needed a special building project to make the most of the space and situation of the house and includes a striking extension, the addition of a second floor, remodelling of the kitchen and dining rooms, a complete mechanical and electrical package and full refurbishment throughout. As with many of Mono’s residential projects the clients vacated the property for the duration due to the extent of the works.
Despite restricted access we moved in large steel-work, heavy folding glass doors and roof glass. The design has ‘statement’ features, using galvanised steel beams, angled plate glass roof and sleek black framing. Thick plate glass ‘beams’ support the glazed roof, maximising the light and open feel of the space.
There is extensive lighting to ensure the brightness of the day is maintained in low-light and night-time, with warm solid wood cupboard doors and other features to soften the space’s strong geometric lines. Upstairs, the bedroom and bathroom are furnished in cool and calm tones with sympathetic furnishings complete the modern and homely feel.
